Hey! My name is Barrett Lo (he/him/his*).
I’d like to think that I’m a designer at heart, continuously considering how each of the human senses may be engaged in any given context. Furniture design (strongly influenced by my time at Ian Saudē), linocut printing (putting my Graphic Communication degree to work!), and wood carving (combining the two aforementioned domains) are my latest creative interests. Much of my undergraduate experience focused on digital UX, and more specifically, UX for extended reality technologies. You might find research related to virtual reality or video games that I’ve written or presented at a conference floating around.
I designed and developed this website! In my aim to better understand the digital product development lifecycle, I taught myself HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and made my Figma dream a reality. For this website, I created a component-based architecture and unique main navigation experiences for mobile and desktop with the help of Svelte.js, SvelteKit, and shadcn-svelte. Previously, this website was created with Vue.js and Nuxt. The website is currently hosted on Cloudflare using the free tier of Cloudflare Pages.
Despite my background in design, I’ve found myself in a software engineer role at Microsoft, under the Azure cloud software-defined networking team. I’m grateful to have a patient and supportive manager to mentor me while I learn about networking and software development.
With any time I have left, I’m usually reading books or watching shows on the various streaming platforms. Check out my book and media recommendations!

Development Experience
Software Engineer 2
Microsoft (Azure Software-Defined Networking)
- Subject matter expert for software-defined host networking services in Azure’s sovereign and air-gapped clouds, resolving high-impact outages and mentoring junior engineers through on-call rotations and tooling improvements to strengthen team capability and service reliability.
- Technical lead for a multi-platform, C#-based, cross-cloud diagnostics platform used by Microsoft engineers, driving its adoption as a standard on-call tool for infrastructure troubleshooting across both public and sovereign/air-gapped clouds.
- Architected and led the on-time delivery of a scalable, distributed system that reduced the time spent on a complex multi-user workflow by 99%. Enables a 30+ person team to replace a manual, days-long process with a minutes-long aggregation and document generation pipeline, directly enabling a premium support offering for Azure customers.
- Prepared internal tooling and fundamental SDN services for privacy and security compliance reviews, ensuring adherence to Microsoft policies and industry best practices.
- Refactored Go-based end-to-end test suite repository to improve maintainability and cross-cloud compatibility, reducing redundant and error-prone code by 35% through modularization and shared libraries.
- Researched, designed, and implemented a C#-based gRPC client and Rust-based gRPC server to facilitate high-throughput, low-latency communication for a cutting-edge hardware acceleration technology in Azure.
